journalistic spin

Watch out for journalistic spin and sensationalism.

Spin is a type of media bias that means vague, dramatic or sensational language. When journalists put a “spin” on a story, they stray from objective, measurable facts. Spin is a form of media bias that clouds a reader’s view, preventing them from getting a precise take on what actually happened.

For example, the headline "Cuomo's coronavirus failure – the real reason for New York's ventilator shortage" from Fox News uses language implying that the villain of this pandemic is Andrew Cuomo. There are verifiable facts about what Cuomo has been doing in New York, but this Fox News reporter used language that would appeal to their readership, giving them someone to blame.
